In 1980, the department of Physics of Dhaka University of Engineering & Technology, Gazipur started functioning as an independent department. At present, the department has twelve faculty members. It has been offering a wide range of Physics courses to the undergraduate students of various engineering discipline. The department of Physics design theoretical courses and sessionals to equip undergraduate students to develop the basic scientific skills so they may succeed in modern society.
The department of Physics, DUET started postgraduate program from the year 2010 to fulfill the demand of the country. This program is mainly designed and initiated keeping in mind the need teaching the students fundamental, applied and advanced courses in different areas of physical and applied sciences and to explore new avenues to basic, applied as well as advanced research work. Both the theoretical courses and the quality research work are being designed to maintain the international standard with a view to opening opportunities for the students who desire to acquire higher degrees for building up their successful careers in the field of Physics or relevant areas.
The department has a strong commitment to both teaching and research excellence within its funding limitation. We focus our resources onto selected research areas to ensure an output of world class research. Currently, the main research areas in the department are the Condensed Matter Physics, Plasma Physics, Nano-materials, Composite Materials and Air Pollution. Recently, steps have been taken to establish research collaboration with the department of Physics of Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET) and Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC), Bangladesh Council for scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR), Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI) and abroad.
The department of Physics makes sincere effort to strengthen its innovative research and education program in accordance with DUET’s long term development plan of becoming a research oriented university in the 21st century.
